................................................................................................................................... Delhi, today is in its seventh incarnation in history. Once known as the city of Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas in the epic Mahabharata, it has had a colourful past. Ruled by different dynasties of conquerors, both Hindu and Muslim, and invaded through the centuries, such conquests have led to the syncretic nature of the way of life in the city, which is also represented in its physical features. Vestiges of its historic Mughal past can still be seen between a modern housing complex on the Ring Road, or in the middle of dense vegetation hidden behind rusting old cars near the Palam airport. The old tombs and forts that lie scattered all over the city, the ruins of the walls of the old walled city that can be found in the most conspicuous of places, popping up where you least expect them to - a unique blend of tradition and modernity!
Not for the weak hearted, she presents a mosaic of culture, art, architecture, religion, markets, institutions, ethnic groups, and all the eccentricities of a multi cultural population. She has offerings for all generations, whether to tickle the senses, or the muses, or just the taste buds!
Though the city of Delhi has witnessed urban sprawl over the decades, none of its charm has been lost, and it continues to offer pleasure to those who seek it. One can either follow a definite pattern to explore the city over several days, or there is that quick tour of the city that the tourist industry offers. If its summer, be armed with a good supply of mineral water, and if you plan an evening out, don’t forget the mosquito repellent and the torch, and find yourself a good taxi driver- all localities have cabbies that are institutions in their locality, and a good deal can be struck with them even to take you outside the city. Payment can be a daily affair but fixed in advance, and not after the spirits are flagging!
Wherever you are in Delhi, you just need the patience and nerve to deal with hordes of people -some just out for bottom pinching - dress, age, colour no bar! ...................................................................................................................................
